Raw Dairy Products or No Dairy?

Cancer diet: As a child on my father’s farm, I grew up eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with organic raw milk and many other raw dairy products. As an adult, I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to go vegan in 2015. But I really think that the raw dairy versus no dairy question can be misleading. What we know from research is that excessive animal protein can contribute to cancer. So if you do consume animal protein, the right questions to ask are what kind of animal products to consume and in what percentage of your total diet?

The China Study

The classic studies on animal products and cancer were conducted by nutritional biochemist T. Colin Campbell of Cornell University. First he fed laboratory rats casein—a milk protein—as 5 percent of their total caloric intake. No cancer developed. When he increased the casein to 10 percent of calories, cancerous tumors began to develop. When the amount of milk protein reached 20 percent of calories, all the test rats got cancer. Dr. Campbell further found that he could turn the cancer off again by reducing the casein back to 5 percent.

So how does this apply to people? To find out, Dr. Campbell launched The China Study—the largest study of its kind ever conducted—and found pretty much the same results in humans. Western diets high in animal protein contribute to cancer and other chronic diseases.

Importance of Proportion

So, if you’re eating like I did as a kid—loads of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and seeds, along with some raw dairy—your amount of animal protein will probably not exceed 5 percent of your total calories. On the other hand, if you’re actually eating dead animals as your protein and the main part of your diet, you’re going to easily exceed that 20 percent mark where cancer comes in.

Sustainable Raw Dairy

Raw milk produced as nature intended—by grass-fed animals nursing their own young—is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. My father, Don Tolman, called it “white grass juice” because the animals naturally process plants for us into a drink that we can easily digest. Our saliva, digestive enzymes, and small intestines are all specially equipped to make the most of raw milk. However, once we become adults, we can certainly eat plants ourselves—even some grasses—for the nutrition we need. So, we don’t really need milk anymore.

And what we really want to avoid is processed, homogenized, and pasteurized milk. We can’t easily digest it, and I personally don’t want anything to do with a product produced so unnaturally. I’ve worked in a dairy before, and the way most dairies treat the animals and add chemicals to the milk (“vitamin-fortified”) is repulsive.

On the other hand, when coming off an extended water fast, I’ve previously taken goat milk mixed with honey as a power drink to rebuild my body—it’s ecstasy. But now as a vegan, I make nut milks, seed milks, and oat milk from oatmeal. Those vegan milks are also nourishing, pure, and full of powerful proteins, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. So, there are the two sides of the raw milk or no milk story. Just be sure to do what’s natural, proportional in your diet, and compatible with sustainable and humane treatment of animals.

Risk of cancer: Medical imaging technology has provided physicians with a nonsurgical method for discovering, diagnosing and monitoring injuries and diseases. Rather than a hospital stay and invasive procedure, patients can undergo a CT scan with little discomfort or down time.

But now research is starting to reveal that those very diagnostic tools that helped patients avoid the risks of surgery are bringing with them an even greater health risk. Studies have found that CT scans, also known as CAT scans, exposes the human body to dangerous ionizing radiation, increasing the lifetime risk for developing cancer by as much as 24 per percent. When CT scans were first introduced, the test was reserved only for the most ill patients and the most challenging cases. The technology was also only available from the largest, most advanced medical facilities.

But, over the course of the past two decades, use of the CT scans has exploded. The combined radiation dose from all medical imaging performed has increased 6-fold. Along with this increase in radiation exposure, there has been an associated growth in the rate of new, preventable cancers.

Unlike a single x-ray image, CT scans are equivalent to a series of individual X-ray images, organized by a powerful computer to produce a high-contrast 3-D image of body contents. Your exposure to dangerous radiation and increased cancer risk from a single CT scan is equivalent to having multiple individual X-rays. The exposure is so large, in fact, that it compares to 10 times your natural exposure.

Do you really know how much radiation is offered in a CT scan?
To understand just how dangerous this exposure is, consider that in one year, you are naturally exposed to about 3 milli-Sieverts (mSv) of radiation due to background radiation in space. Compare this to undergoing a single CT scan of your head, which can expose you to about 2 mSVBy or a full abdominal scan that could involve more than 30 mSv. That’s 10-fold the expected, yearly natural exposure!

Radiation exposures between 5 and 125 mSv are already considered ‘statistically significant’ because of the increases in cancer risk. But people who already have a known malignant growth are typically exposed to even higher radiation levels than healthy individuals because of the frequency of scans for diagnostic and follow-up purposes.

Startling statistics reveal lasting dangers of CT scans
In a British Medical Journal study published in 2013, researchers followed about 11 million subjects from birth in the 1980s to young adulthood. Within that group, the researchers were able to identify 680,000 who had at least one CT scan.

Those who underwent a CT scan at some point in childhood increased their risk of developing cancer by 24 percent compared to those who didn’t go through a scan. The more scans the study subjects had, the greater their risk of developing cancer.

This increased risk remained for a considerable period afterward. The study’s researchers determined that those who underwent a CT scan in also found that the more scans a person had, the greater the risk of developing cancer. The increased risk for cancer did not go away after only a few days. Researchers found that a 35 percent increase in risk persisted for the first four years following exposure, tapering off to 25 percent in five to nine years, and 14 percent in 10 to 14 years following exposure.

Protect yourself from the harmful effects of CT scans
Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce your risk of exposure from a CT scan. Of course, the most logical first step is to simply discuss your concerns with your medical providers. Ask if there are any alternatives that could provide similar opportunities for diagnosis without the exposure to harmful radiation.

There are also specific nutrients with corresponding actions that may help protect against radiation if taken ahead of time. For example, lemon balm extract prevents formation of dangerous reactive chemicals formed by ionizing radiation exposure, while ginkgo biloba extract protects DNA from cancer-causing damage. A third nutrient, spirulina – reduces the harmful effects of ionizing radiation by supporting bone marrow and its production of vital blood cells.

If you must undergo a CT scan or other powerful source of ionizing radiation, start supplementing with these three protective ingredients. Take the combination one to three times daily for five days before the scheduled scan and for at least five days afterwards.

What is the Sugar Cancer Connection?

Due to the anaerobic respiratory mechanism exhibited by ALL cancer cells,sugar is cancer’s favorite food! Sugar and cancer: And since half of the white sugar in the USA comes from sugar beets, you should remember that most beets are now genetically modified. This is another reason to stay away from the “White Death,” isn’t it?

I personally recommend that you avoid white sugar, brown sugar, agave, and all artificial sweeteners such as aspartame/AminoSweet, sucralose, and saccharin. If you have a sweet tooth, it’s best to stick with 100% pure stevia, xylitol, raw honey, pure maple syrup, molasses, and coconut sugar.

The bottom line: if you want to be and stay healthy, you MUST take control of your sugar intake so that it doesn’t take control over you.

Ending the Sugar Confusion

It’s easy to become confused by the various sugars and sweeteners, so here is a basic overview:

  • Saccharide= sugar
  • Glucose(aka “dextrose” or “grape sugar”), galactose (“milk sugar”), and fructose (“fruit sugar”) are all “monosaccharides” (i.e. single sugar molecules), known as “simple sugars.” The primary difference between them is the way your body metabolizes them.
  • Glucose is a form of energy you were designed to run on. Every cell in your body uses glucose for energy.
  • High amounts of fructose are very damaging to the body if it isn’t burned immediately for energy because it travels directly to the liver where it’s converted to triglycerides (fats). Excess triglycerides increase insulin resistance (and insulin production), thus contributing to diabetes in a “back door” fashion.
  • The simple sugars can combine to form more complex sugars, like sucrose (“table sugar”) which is a “disaccharide” comprised of 50% glucose and 50% fructose.
  • “Refined” white sugar(pure sucrose) is washed with a syrup solution, then with hot water, clarified (usually chemically) to remove impurities, decolorized, concentrated, evaporated, re-boiled until crystals form, centrifuged again to separate, then dried. By this point, any remnants of “natural goodness” and “nutritional value” have completely disappeared! Quite frankly, white sugar should be considered an “industrial product” rather than “food.”
  • “Brown sugar”is white sugar mixed with molasses.
  • “Raw” sugaris not really raw. It has been cooked, and most of the minerals and vitamins are gone. But it’s probably a little better than refined white sugar because it has a little of the molasses remaining.
  • Aspartame or AminoSweetis a neurotoxic rat poison… need I say more?
  • Splenda (sucralose)is NOT a sugar, despite its deceptive marketing slogan, “made from sugar.” It’s a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame, though not quite as harmful.
  • Honeyis approximately 50% fructose, but in natural (raw and unpasteurized) form contains many health benefits. Buying honey that is local and unpasteurized is best.
  • Steviais an extremely sweet herb derived from the leaf of the South American stevia plant, which is completely safe (in its natural form). Green stevia is the whole plant, while white stevia is processed and can often contain other ingredients like natural flavors or dextrose − a form of sugar. 100% green stevia in its natural state is what you want.
  • Agave nectaris made from the agave plant, which is a cactus. Sounds natural, right? Like maple syrup from a tree, or honey from a beehive. Only it isn’t. Agave is HIGHLY processed while the end product does not even remotely resemble the original agave plant. Furthermore, agave is approximately 80% fructose (much higher than honey and maple syrup).
  • HFCS (high fructose corn syrup)is 55% fructose and 45% glucose. It is mostly genetically modified. Stay away!
  • Rapadurais the pure juice extracted from the sugar cane (using a press), which is then evaporated over low heat, whilst being stirred with paddles, then sieve ground to produce a grainy sugar. It has not been cooked at high heats or spun to change it into crystals, and the molasses is maintained in the sugar. “Sucanat” is the USA trade name for Rapadura.
  • Coconut sugaris made from the sweet watery sap that drips from the cut flower buds of the coconut palm. It has a low glycemic index (GI) and is rich in amino acids. It is typically less than 10% fructose, with sucrose being the primary component.
  • Xylitolis a sweetener known as a “sugar alcohol” (or polyol). Sugar alcohols are neither sugars nor alcohols − they are carbohydrates (with structures that happen to resemble sugar and alcohol). Xylitol is extracted from corn or birch cellulose. Unlike sugar, Xylitol is slowly absorbed, does not cause a rapid blood sugar increase, and does not require an immediate insulin response from the body to be metabolized. Moreover,  many studies have shown that it actually helps prevent dental cavities, ear infections, and some evidence suggests that it helps prevent gum disease because Xylitol is anti-bacterial. However, Xylitol does have some potential health side effects (most notably gastrointestinal issues) and should be used with caution.

Superantigen – immunology therapy

What is it?

Superantigen (SAg) can activate as much as 40% of total body T cells, NK cells and other immunity cells. It’s activation rate is up to 50,000 times that of a normal antigen. No other method that we know of can achieve this kind of stimulation effect.
